Series of articles for Parliament Week

The History has commissioned a new series of ‘Explore’ articles to celebrate Parliament Week, an initiative coordinated by both the House of Commons and the House of Lords that looks at the people, places and events that support democracy in the UK. To find out more, visit www.parliamentweek.org.

Throughout the week, 19-25 November, the History will release articles that will mark major events in parliamentary history on the dates they happened. Over the week the History’s academics will commemorate the ‘Parliament of Devils’ during the Wars of the Roses; the Commons’ petition to Elizabeth I regarding Mary, Queen of Scots; Charles I’s birthday in 1600; debates over the proposed union with Scotland in 1606; the publication of Milton’s ‘Areopagitica’ on freedom of the press; the vote on the Bill of attainder for the Jacobite conspirator Sir John Fenwick in 1696 and the formation of Earl Grey’s reforming government in 1830.
