Introductory Survey 1690-1715

by D.W. Hayton, published in 2002

The survey introducing the biographies and constituency articles published in the 1690-1715 volumes was prepared by Professor David Hayton, one of the editors of the volumes.

Like all the introductory surveys, it provides information on the conventions, methods and sources used in the compilation of the biographies and constituency articles. The section on constituencies and elections among other things provides an estimate of the size of the county electorate and analyses the different franchises found in boroughs, describes the complex systems of election used in Scotland and Wales, and reviews the evidence concerning the conduct of elections throughout the country.
