Biography

In 1416, called ‘the younger’, this John Alfray was made a trustee of property in East Grinstead belonging to Thomas May. In the following year, together with his father, he acquired some land at Worth, a few miles away from their home. His father’s friend, the former shire knight Richard Wayville* of Rodmell left young John 20s. in his will, made in May 1417, asking him to be sure to pray for his soul. Save for his appointment to collect subsidies in Sussex, and his two elections to Parliament, Alfray is not otherwise recorded until 1439, when it was presumably he, rather than his younger namesake, who was enfeoffed of property at Hartfield.

The family tradition of parliamentary service for East Grinstead was carried on into the fourth generation by John (who sat for this borough four times between 1447 and 1459) and by Richard, returned in 1460, 1467 and 1478.
