By September 1410 Boteler was in possession of a field at Horsham known as ‘Boteleresmede’; two years later he acquired a dovecote in the garden of a house at Lynde, in the same parish; and over the years he came to hold a number of other properties in the vicinity, including land at Roffey called ‘Elyottes’, ‘Cokhuntys Grove’, ‘Hethelond’ and ‘Segrymes’.1 Boteler witnessed deeds at Horsham down to 1432.2
While attending the shire court at Chichester for the elections to the Parliament of November 1414, Boteler attested the indenture of return for the knights of the shire. Like his older namesake and presumed father, he became involved in the affairs of Sir William Burcester*. Thus, by a transaction completed in 1421 he was made a co-feoffee with Walter Urry* (Burcester’s son-in-law) and Richard Wakehurst* of lands in Warnham, by grant of Burcester’s widow Margaret. He and Urry had been colleagues in the Parliament of March 1416 and were to be associated on other occasions, too.3
The date of Boteler’s death is not recorded, but it probably occurred before September 1436, for it was then that the trustees of his lands handed them over to another group, headed by Wakehurst and Urry, which proceeded to found a chantry known henceforth as ‘Boteler’s chantry’ in Horsham church. There, prayers were to be said for the welfare of the King and Horsham’s lord, John, duke of Norfolk, and for the souls of Boteler and his wife Mary in the illustrious company of Henry IV, Henry V, Queen Katherine and the previous duke. Royal licence was obtained in July 1444 for the endowment of the chantry with property at Horsham and Itchingfield worth £7 a year.4
