Biography

Between 1390 and 1393 Carhorta was engaged in a dispute with Thomas Paderda* and his wife over land in Killiserth by Killigrew in St. Erme, not far to the north of Truro, and what little evidence there is of his landed holdings suggests that he lived somewhere in that area of Cornwall. In the Hilary term of 1393 he and other members of his family (including Ena, widow of Richard Carhorta, who may have been his mother), were defendants in an action brought in the King’s bench by John Botreaux, senior, the latter alleging that they had broken into his property at ‘Hamme’ and ‘Analdabethan’, felled his trees, and stolen chattels to the value of £20. Two years later Carhorta was engaged in yet another lawsuit, this time at the Launceston assizes, in which he had to defend his title to a messuage and some 30 acres of land in ‘Analsa’ and ‘Lenewy’. In January 1399 he took out a royal pardon of outlawry for failing to appear in court in London to answer a plea of debt for £50 brought by the executors of a London fletcher.2 The only record of Carhorta which does not relate to a lawsuit was his return to Parliament.

Notes

  • 1. JUST 1/1502 m. 193d. Both Carhorta’s father and grandfather were called Richard and it is more likely to have been one of them rather than he himself who sat in the Parliament of 1384 (Apr.) as burgess for Liskeard.
