Biography

In 1404 Chandler and his wife inherited from William Salter* (like him a weaver), an interest for life in a house in Oldport, Devizes, on the understanding that, when Salter’s wife died, they should pay a rent of 3s. a year to the mayor of Devizes, and that when they too died, the property should revert permanently to the commonalty. Little more is known of Chandler, save that in 1434 he was to act, along with John Coventre† of Devizes, as an arbiter for Robert Ismelle† during the latter’s dispute with the executors of William Walshot.
