Biography

This MP is said to have been the son of Hugh Colclough*, who sat for Newcastle in 1407, but although the two men were probably kinsmen, their precise relationship remains open to conjecture. It is, indeed, possible that the Richard Colclough senior, who was involved in property transactions at Bradwell, Staffordshire, at the very beginning of the 15th century, was his father. Circumstantial evidence does, however, support the belief that Richard married a daughter of the influential local landowner, John Delves†, in whose affairs Hugh Colclough played a significant part. During the Easter term of 1425 Delves was sued by the prior of Trentham for custody of the late Richard Colclough’s next heir. The prior won his case, having proved to the court’s satisfaction that the Colcloughs held land by knight service of the priory, and were therefore liable to the claims of wardship. The property in question comprised seven messuages and extensive farmland in the Staffordshire village of Blurton (which lies to the southeast of Newcastle). Perhaps the subject of this biography also owned an estate at Wolstanton in the same county, described in 1461 as having formerly been in the hands of one Richard Colclough before passing to a son named John.
