The Dentons were an influential Cumbrian family, many of whose members played an important part in the government of Carlisle during the later Middle Ages. Adam was quite probably related to the Richard Denton who represented the city in the Parliaments of 1373 and 1377 (Jan.), but his identity is otherwise hard to establish. An Adam Denton of Sebergham (which lies some ten miles south-west of Carlisle) is known to have died in about 1408, leaving a son, Thomas, who married Thomas More II’s* daughter, Alice; and he might well have been returned to the House of Commons as a young man. We may be reasonably sure that William Denton, mayor of Carlisle in 1413 and 1416, and Adam Denton, a prominent member of the local gentry at this time, were also kinsmen of the MP.
