Biography

Dering is first noted in December 1392 as a suitor of the borough court (sectator curie) held in Southampton guildhall. A cloth manufacturer on a small scale, by 1394 he was sufficiently well off to purchase two houses on the west side of English Street which had previously belonged to the wealthy merchant and nine-times mayor, John Polymond†, but he sold them seven years later, during his bailiffship. Meanwhile, it had been during his term as steward that Dering had been returned to both Parliaments of 1397. He is last heard of in August 1402 when Richard Bradway*, acting as executor of the will of Juliana Reigate, sold to him and John Mascall* reversionary interests in two tenements and a vault in English Street.3
