Biography

Matthew was perhaps the son of Henry Goldyve, the shipmaster who served as mayor of Rye three times between 1353 and 1364.1 In 1375 he stood surety for the widow of James Ivory, lately mayor of Rye, following a summons from the Exchequer. By 1388 he had moved to nearby Winchelsea, which paid him £2 6s.8d. in advance for attending the Cambridge Parliament, and, in December following, sent him to represent it at the regular Brodhull held at New Romney.2

Goldyve died before December 1395, when his daughter, Agnes, made a conveyance of all the lands she had inherited from him at Broomhill, some of which were held as a tenant of Robertsbridge abbey.3
