Biography

Although Hordere occupied the post of clerk of the peace in Dorset for over 15 years, very little is known about him. In 1381 and 1394 he was associated with John Perle I, a knight of the shire, in transactions concerning property in Long Critchell, which belonged to Richard Gouvitz. Meanwhile, he had acted as a feoffee of the manor of ‘Pegges’ and a messuage in Shaftesbury, and had himself acquired a reversionary interest in property in the same town. On 15 Feb. 1397, three days after the dissolution of the Parliament to which he had been returned by Shaftesbury, Hordere stood surety in Chancery for John Yeftle, prior of the house of Carmelite friars at Marlborough, who had been accused of a trespass.2 He was still discharging office as clerk to the local justices in 1411, but there is no record of him thereafter.
