Biography

In 1404 Mersey conveyed to William Knight a messuage and nine acres of land at Tenterden, Kent, belonging to his wife. He was established in Rye by the following year when he visited Dover on the town’s business in company with the mayor, and having been elected to the Parliament which assembled in March 1406, he also represented Rye at the Brodhull held in July that year, during the parliamentary recess. Altogether he attended the House of Commons for 80 days, half the days on which, in three sessions, this unusually long Parliament met. He is recorded as witnessing deeds at Rye between 1408 and 1411, and in about 1414 he was assessed at 4s. for a scot levied there. Under Henry V he served on the ship which Rye provided for royal use.2
