Biography

Modys first appears in 1398, when he and his wife joined with members of the Wyke family in conveying two tofts and farmland in Fetcham and Great Bookham, Surrey, to John Ingram, although their main interest as property owners lay in Bletchingley itself, where they accumulated a number of tenements. It was at about this time that the MP fell foul of a clerk named Simon Helgeye, being bound over in sureties of £40 in the court of Chancery a few months later to do no further harm to him. Modys served as a juror at the inquisition post mortem held in the borough in September 1403 on the estates of Edmund, earl of Stafford; and was evidently still alive in 1434 when he witnessed a local deed.2
