Biography

William Sage II must already have been of age when his father died in August 1397, because he was chosen, along with his mother, Maud, and John Carter I*, to execute his will. He received a ship called Le Trinite, complete with tackle, and was confirmed in the reversion of all the family property, which Maud occupied for the rest of her life. William witnessed a local deed in 1399, and appears to have shipped a quantity of iron into the port of Kingston-upon-Hull two years later. Little else, however, is known about him until 1403, when he served the first of several terms as bailiff of Scarborough, an office occupied by his father before him. He returned himself to the Parliament of January 1404, but did not sit again in the Lower House for another ten years, by which time he had gained further experience of local government as a j.p. and royal commissioner. He had, meanwhile, offered sureties in the court of Chancery on behalf of a local mason who was being sued by his parliamentary colleague, John Mosdale, in his capacity as keeper of Scarborough castle.3

William died on 6 Jan. 1419, leaving at least one son, William Sage III*, who also obtained a seat in Parliament.4
