Biography

Shortly before July 1384 Scott, as master of the balinger belonging to the community of Hastings, was party to the capture and plunder of a ship from Stralsund, seized off Berwick-upon-Tweed by a fleet from the Cinque Ports. Under Henry IV he held a little land at Udimore, Guestling, Fairlight and Bexley on which, as a baron of the Ports, he was able to claim exemption from taxation.1

Notes

There is insufficient evidence to identify him with the John Scott who represented Hythe in Parliament in April 1384 and served as a jurat of that Port in 1386-8 and 1389-90: Hythe reg. 1, ff. 12, 14d.
