Biography

The Stikelanes had been established in Bridport since the 13th century, but in the late 14th and early 15th centuries several members of the family were returned to Parliament not only for that borough but also for Lyme. Robert Stikelane of Bridport, who died in 1362, appointed as his executor one John Stikelane ‘of Watford’ (perhaps Whitford, near Lyme), and it may well have been the latter who represented Lyme in the Commons. The will also gave John rights of remainder in property in Bridport. It was at Dorchester, however, that in 1378 Stikelane served on a jury which supplied evidence regarding a dispute over certain estates in Dorset.
