Biography

Perhaps the son of William and Agnes Wynd, who in 1357 held a shop in Wells for term of their lives in survivorship, John himself lived in Bridgwater, where he acquired properties in Orlove Street, North Street, Fore Street and outside the west gate. He is first recorded in Bridgwater in 1362 when acting as an attorney for the delivery of seisin of premises in the town, and thereafter he appeared on several occasions in the borough court. In 1372 he was fined 6d. when his sheep strayed, and in 1380 he was a defendant in a plea of false accusation. In October 1386 he was amerced 6d. for absence from a session of the guild merchant. Wynd held only minor offices in the town, but as warden of St Mary’s in 1385-6 he had to ride twice to Wells to prosecute in the chapter and obtain summonses against chantry tenants. He is last recorded, as a collector of a local subsidy, in 1396-7.3
