Biography

The Henry Bagot listed as the junior Member for Marlborough in the Parliament of 1529 does not seem to have been related to the ancient Staffordshire house of Bagot. It is almost certain, however, that the name is not a mis-spelling, as in 1532-3 a Henry Bagot was one of 24 burgesses who made up the mayor’s council at Marlborough. After a gap of four years during which there are no records, Bagot again appears as a member of the council, but he is not mentioned in the next surviving entry book of the corporation, that for 1542-3. Only one other reference to Bagot has come to light. In the will which Sir Edward Darrell of Littlecote made on 25 July 1528, it is stated that 16 feoffees including Bagot are seised of Darrell’s lands in Berkshire, Dorset and Wiltshire, from which they are to pay 20 marks a year to his second son Edmund. As Edmund Darrell was Bagot’s fellow-Member for Marlborough, it is likely that Bagot owed his election to that family, which had its seat at Littlecote, only a few miles to the east, and also held property in Marlborough. He may even have been a servant of Darrell’s, although his involvement in municipal life implies that he lived in the borough.3

The obscurity which surrounds Bagot makes it impossible to say whether he outlived the Parliament of 1529 or sat in its successors of 1536 and 1539: Edmund Darrell, who might have mentioned him in his will, died in or before 1539 apparently intestate.
