Biography

Richard Herbert’s election for Montgomery Boroughs to the second Parliament of Edward VI’s reign was clearly the work of his father who had sat for the Boroughs in the three previous Parliaments but was debarred from doing so in 1553 by his shrievalty. Herbert was joined in the House by his uncle Edward Herbert as knight for Montgomeryshire. During his own shrievalty in 1584 Herbert was to return two of his cousins and namesakes for the shire and Boroughs. Of the rest of his life, apart from his role in local administration, all that has come to light is that in 1603 he accused two of the sons of John Vaughan of Llwydiarth in the Star Chamber of abusing their authority as justices of the peace. By his will made on 1 June 1603 and proved on 22 Nov. 1605 he provided for his wife and sons, and left Dr. Lloyd of All Souls College, Oxford, a horse for the kindness shown to his son Humphrey.3
