Biography

John Ladde of Beccles, perhaps a connexion of the family of Terrington, Norfolk, was made a freeman of Great Yarmouth in 1512 ‘on condition that he will remain within the town and liberty aforesaid’. He was apparently the first of his family to be associated with the town, but his descendants were to remain there for some generations. In the subsidy roll for 1523 he was assessed on goods worth £40. In 1527 he and Thomas Gladon complained to Wolsey that Sir William Paston had unjustly indicted a number of men in Great Yarmouth for rioting: Paston was lord of the manor of Caister next Yarmouth and there was a long-standing dispute between him and the town.4

It was doubtless to his local standing that Ladde owed his return to the Parliament of 1529. He was not, however, to see it through. He died between 3 Oct. 1532, the day on which he made his will, and 15 Jan. 1534, when it was proved: although he was replaced in the Commons by Philip Bernard, the doubt attaching to the date of the by-election leaves it uncertain whether Ladde survived to attend the fifth session early in 1533. By the will he left his house and goods to his wife Margaret for life or until she married again, with remainder to his sons Robert, John and Ralph. To these sons (the last of whom, Ralph, was under age) he left his ships, the Michael, the Jesus, and the Nicholas, to his daughter Elizabeth 40 marks, and to his sister Margaret an annuity of 20s. for five years. His executors, Robert and John Ladde and Thomas Hunt, were instructed to sell all his herrings and his great fishhouse.5
