Biography

David ap Llewellyn Lloyd came from a gentle family which claimed descent from Rhys ap Gruffydd, the lord of Deheubarth who organized the first eisteddfod at Cardigan in 1176. Lloyd could have owed his return to the Parliament of 1546 to a connexion with the sheriff Morris ap John ap Rhydderch; whereas the opening of the Parliament was postponed from January 1545 until the autumn, Lloyd and John Vaughan ap Rhydderch delivered £187 collected by them to the Exchequer in July. There may also have been local resentment at the intrusion of Thomas Eynns as Morgan ap Rhys ap Philip’s replacement in the previous Parliament, but if Lloyd is identifiable with the man in the service of the principality of South Wales earlier in the reign he too perhaps had official backing. Lloyd took part in the shire elections to the following Parliament in 1547 and to the second Parliament of Mary’s reign. During 1554 or 1555 Valentine Dale, who had displaced a Protestant as vicar of Llandyssul, sued Lloyd in Chancery in the hope of breaking leases granted by his precursor to Lloyd, with what outcome is unknown. Lloyd was named to the bench at the accession of Elizabeth, but as he was not reappointed in 1561 and no further trace of him has been found he may have died shortly afterwards.3
