Biography

Little has come to light about Giles Payne beyond the facts of his birth, death and Membership of Parliament. He is mentioned in a Star Chamber case in Edward VI’s reign as a servant of Sir Edmund Brydges, who also sat for Wootton Bassett (and whose grandfather’s name Payne bore). The plaintiff accused Payne of supporting Brydges’s threats on his life and of helping his master to conceal a murder and flout the authority of the council in the marches of Wales; two other Members, William Rede I and John Tunks, also adherents of Brydges, were involved in this case. It was thus doubtless under Brydges’s patronage that Payne was returned to the two Parliaments of 1554. His withdrawal from the second of them without leave led to an information being laid against him in the King’s bench in Easter term 1555 but no further proceedings were taken against him. In the information he was styled ‘of Bristol’, a city with which neither he nor Sir Edmund Brydges is known to have been connected. In view of the enthusiastic support of Mary by the Brydges family, Payne is unlikely to have absented himself as a gesture of dissent, but he was not to be returned again.3

Until his mother’s death Payne lived at Winchcombe where in 1545 he was assessed towards the subsidy on £10. If he made a will it has not been traced, but the inquisition taken on 15 Dec. 1570 found that he had died at Rodborough on the previous 1 Sept. leaving his brother Walter heir to his lands in Gloucestershire. His widow Jane married one William Hampshire, perhaps his fellow-Member in the Parliament of November 1554.4
