The John Pyne returned by Lyme Regis to the Parliament of 1529 appears to have been a stranger to the town, although he had a contemporary there named Robert Pyne who was succeeded in 1539 by a son John. By that year, however, the Member was dead, and it is the note to this effect on the list of Members as it was revised in the spring of 1532 which suggests an identification with a London scrivener whose will, originally made in 1521, was revised on 29 July 1531 and proved on the following 9 Aug. This John Pyne came of Devon stock and had been born in Plymouth. In his will he referred to another west countryman, George Rolle, as his ‘master’ and he may have been Rolle’s deputy as keeper of the records of common pleas; he had business connexions with Sir Thomas Denys, one of the knights for Devon in 1529, and was a neighbour of Rowland Hill whom he appointed with Rolle an executor of his will. He may also have been one of the feoffees of the parish church of Axmouth, Devon, who started two suits in Chancery between 1515 and 1518 to recover the deeds of property at Colyford; their counsel was William Wadham, steward of Lyme Regis, who himself died in 1522 but whose kinsman Sir Nicholas Wadham was to be one of the knights for Somerset in 1529. (Dorset and Somerset shared a sheriff, who would thus have been responsible for returning both Wadham and Pyne.) The scrivener or his eldest son could also have been the man described as an attorney of the court of common pleas in two undated Star Chamber cases over property in Somerset. Pyne may have been replaced in the Commons by John Tudoll for the remaining sessions of the Parliament.3
