Biography

The Strete family was prominent at Leominster, and William Strete, who in 1553 was assessed for subsidy there on £10 in goods, was doubtless related to the Humphrey Strete named bailiff in the charter of 1554. He had been granted the woodwardship of Ashwood at the suit of its previous holder, the town’s benefactor Sir Philip Hoby, and it may have been to Hoby as well as to his own local standing that he owed his return to Mary’s first Parliament; he could have sat in the previous Parliament for which the Leominster Members are unknown. Yet Strete does not seem to have shared Hoby’s Protestant sympathies since neither he nor his fellow John Polle ‘stood for the true religion’ against the initial measures to restore Catholicism. The date of Strete’s death is unknown but it had taken place before 30 Nov. 1557 when his interest in Ashwood was leased to Humphrey Coningsby.3
