Biography

The Burgoynes had strong recusant connexions, and the life of this Member is obscure. His patron at Bere Alston was presumably Charles Blount, later 8th Lord Mountjoy, a contemporary at the Middle Temple of Burgoyne’s brother or cousin, William. Various seventeenth-century letters addressed to a ‘Mr. Burgoyne’ from Lord Zouche, whose cousin married a Devon woman, may relate to the 1593 Member, whose will was proved at Exeter in 1624. In the Earl of Leicester’s will mention is made of a secretary named ‘Burgane’, but nothing has been found to connect him with the MP. In 1593 the burgesses for Bere Alston were twice appointed to committees dealing with kerseys (23 Mar., 2 Apr.).
