Biography

Little has been ascertained about Durninge’s early life, and no connexion has been established between him and the John Durninge who was made a third baron of the Exchequer in Ireland in 1575. Presumably returned for Corfe Castle through the influence of Sir Robert Cecil and Sir Edward Coke, he is not mentioned in the known proceedings of the House. In 1597 he was granted an annuity of £50 in return for the surrender of lands in Emery Molineux, and this was still being paid at the end of the reign. He owned some property in Essex, and died at Maxey Castle in 1623, his will being made 24 July and proved 21 Oct. He left £500 to a cousin, £250 to a nephew, £100 to another cousin, and four other cousins received £10 apiece. His sister was to have an annuity of £5. A posthumous child, should there be one, was to have £1,000 and the bulk of the property. The widow was appointed executrix.
