Biography

Hall was a nephew of Ralph Hall. He belonged to the small group of rich and locally important York merchants who played a leading part in civic affairs. He was one of the merchants who were trading through the Sound before 1579, contributed £20 to the Queen’s loan in 1590 and acquired a certain amount of landed property. He is not known to have taken an active part in the 1601 Parliament, although he may have attended the committees to which the citizens of York were appointed concerning the order of business (3 Nov.), the clothworkers bill (18 Nov.) and silk weavers (10 Dec.).

He died in 1620, being buried 12 Apr. at All Hallows, Pavement, York, near his first wife.
