Biography

Elected knight of the shire during his father’s lifetime, Heigham’s name does not appear in the journals of the House, though all the county Members were on the subsidy committee (26 Feb.) and a legal committee (9 Mar.). Heigham was a soldier, who served in France, Ireland and Cadiz. In February 1597 his offer to become muster master in Suffolk without emoluments was accepted in view of his ‘very good experience and sufficiency’. Though by 29 Apr. 1601 he was ‘well content to leave’ his muster mastership, he must have continued to hold that or a similar post, for in 1603 he complained of receiving a peremptory command ‘for the viewing of certain lances’ from some Norfolk gentry, including Sir Bassingbourne Gawdy II, Sir Arthur Heveningham and (Sir) Nathaniel Bacon. ‘Considering in what place he serves her Majesty’, Heigham thought they might have known that neither he nor his horses were to be commanded by them. If he were ever to do that kind of work he would expect ‘a higher place than they can appoint, or for the matter of that, can execute themselves’.

He died at Barrow, where he was buried on 26 May 1634. An inscription in his memory was engraved over his father’s defaced epitaph.
