Biography

Hogan’s father, a friend and correspondent of Thomas Cromwell, had been active in the suppression of the religious houses in East Anglia, and had naturally bought monastic property, such as the lands of Wardling priory. Hogan succeeded his father in 1547, but was not licensed to enter on his lands until March 1551. In March 1550, he was granted, at a price, some of the lands of the attainted 3rd Duke of Norfolk; but these together with many of his other estates he sold over the next few years.1

Hogan voted against a government measure in 1555, and was a conforming protestant at the beginning of Elizabeth’s reign, despite his connexion with the 4th Duke of Norfolk, who nominated him for King’s Lynn in the Parliament of 1559, and probably at Thetford in 1571, where Edward Clere and his wife, daughter of Richard Fulmerston, controlled matters for the Howards. On 14 June 1571 Hogan was deprived of his Norfolk and Huntingdonshire receivership for not turning in the money due on 20 Mar. 1569. He was with the Duke at Kenninghall during the first stage of the Mary Stuart marriage scheme, but Norfolk’s fall did not affect him. He drew up his will 26 Jan. and died 7 Mar. 1586.2
