Biography

There is nothing to connect any particular John Hunt with the man of that name who was the 1571 Sudbury MP. A possible candidate was born c.1537, son of Richard Hunt of Ashen, Essex, by Anne, daughter and heiress of Thomas Knighton of Bradley, Suffolk. He married Jane, daughter of Henry Colt of Cavendish, in the same county, by whom he had one surviving son and two daughters who predeceased him. He succeeded his grandfather in 1552 and was a Suffolk j.p. from c.1577. His wife was brought up at Colt’s Hall near Sudbury, which provides at least some link with the borough. He died about 1605 and was buried at Little Bradley, where there is a monumental inscription to him and his wife. The DNB suggests another candidate, of Lyndon, Rutland, related to the chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster, who could have secured his return for Sudbury.
