Biography

The Lamberts, who established themselves in Hampshire in the sixteenth century, were the descendants of a London goldsmith who died in 1545. Haseley in Twyford was the first possession of the family in the county, and their position was further established by the marriage of Lambert’s father to one of the co-heirs of Richard Andrews—a marriage which eventually made Lambert lord of Laverstoke. The other half of the Andrews property descended to another daughter, Katherine, and her husband John Paulet. A further connexion with the Paulets was created when Lambert’s uncle Walter married as his second wife a daughter of Sir George Paulet, brother of Sir William Paulet, 3rd Marquess of Winchester. Lambert was also related to another leading Hampshire family, the Wallops. His uncle Walter had married, as his first wife, Rose, a daughter of Sir Oliver Wallop, and her brother William Wallop later married, as his third wife, a sister of Lambert’s wife. Lambert resided at Laverstoke in 1582 but by the early 1590s he had moved to Southampton, where some of his relatives already were. From 1596, when he became a burgess, Lambert took an active part in Southampton affairs, his rise in the hierarchy leading to his return to Parliament for the borough in 1601. His will, made 2 Oct. 1619, was proved 9 May by the executor, his eldest son Thomas. Lambert died 7 Apr. 1621.
