Biography

A younger son of one of Radnorshire’s leading families, Lewis presumably had no difficulty in gaining election in 1597. His father was made a burgess of New Radnor under the charter granted in 1562. Lewis left no mark on the records of the House. He may have attended the Newport bridge committee to which all Welsh constituency Members were appointed on 29 Nov. 1597. Early in the reign of James I, he was cited in a Star Chamber suit brought by Sir Henry Guilford. As under-sheriff Lewis had collected the personal possessions of (Sir) Gelly Meyrick on his attainder and deposited them with the sheriff, who, Guilford claimed, had retained some of them in his possession in defiance of the Queen’s grant to Guilford.

These incidents apart, Lewis remains an elusive figure. In his father’s will, made in 1601, he was bequeathed the lands already in his possession. The date of his death is unknown.2
