Biography

Peyton, Sir John Cutts and John Cotton ran Cambridgeshire at this period, and there is no sign that Peyton’s interests ever took him outside the county except for his appearance as knight of the shire, when he could have attended the subsidy committee (26 Feb.) and a legal committee (9 Mar.). It was probably he rather than John Peyton I who was named to the committee on disloyal subjects (4 Apr.), as John Peyton I was knighted by then, but D’Ewes’s form of address is not conclusive one way or the other. The Cambridgeshire Peyton may have shared the puritan views of his cousin Lord Rich. In the preamble to his will he wrote that he hoped to be saved by the Lord Jesus Christ,

the immaculate lamb of God who[m] the lord of Glory, of his endless and everlasting favour towards mankind, did ordain and appoint ... before the world was made that he should be the slain sacrifice for the whole world, but especially for God’s elect of whom, and through whom, I hope by the precious blood of Jesus Christ His passion to be saved.

Peyton died 19 Dec. 1616. His daughter Susan, executrix, proved the will 14 May 1617.
