Biography

Described as junior in the Crown Office list, Purefoy should not be confused with his cousin, and namesake, the head of the senior branch of the family at Fenny Drayton, just across the border in Leicestershire. Though he had family connexions with the earls of Shrewsbury, Leicester and Rutland, Purefoy no doubt owed his return at Beverley to his elder brother Humphrey, a law member of the council in the north, and an admirer of the lord president, the 3rd Earl of Huntingdon. He gradually built up a not inconsiderable estate for his son and heir, Gamaliel. All his land purchases, beginning in 1575 with a moiety of the manor of Bramcote, were of parts of the old Zouche estates, mostly in the parish of Bulkington. To Bramcote he added a moiety of Weston-in-Arden manor, and, in 1601, the manor of Wolvershill. He also bought a moiety of Wibtoft manor. He died in October 1615.
