Biography

Saltern traded with Spain and Portugal. In August 1577 he and three other Bristol merchants, including Thomas Aldworth II, were instructed by the Privy Council to require all men of Bristol ‘as are retailers and artificers trading with Spain, to forbear any more to traffic in that country’. Saltern was a supporter of a proposed voyage to America in 1583. In 1588 he was elected to serve in the following Parliament, but died before it met, his replacement being elected on 3 Feb. 1589.
