Salveyn’s return for Hedon was due to Sir John Constable, who had the controlling interest there. Sir Francis Salveyn, John’s elder brother, had served with Constable on the frontier with Scotland, and the two families were related through the marriage of Constable’s sister to Sir Ralph Ellerker, Sir Francis Salveyn’s brother-in-law. The Salveyns were well connected generally, to the Bulmers, Conyers, Askes and the 1st Lord Eure, but both branches of the family, the junior of Newbiggin and the senior of Croxdale, Durham, were Catholic, which accounts for their not being on the commission of the peace in this period after Sir Francis Salveyn’s death in 1562. Nothing has been ascertained about John Salveyn after his return to Parliament in 1559.
