Biography

Scott, a clothier, was one of the first 12 burgesses of Chippenham named in the 1554 charter of incorporation. He engaged in local affairs and served on a number of local juries. His assessment of £20, for the subsidy of 1576, was the highest in the town and his annual contribution towards provisioning the royal household was raised in the reign of James I from 3s.4d. to 4s.2d. He may have been the John Scott who possessed lands in the manor of Amesbury. In 1605 he leased some of the town lands from which, in 1610, he made a gift of 30s. to the corporation. He died before 27 Dec. 1619.
