Biography

This man has been identified as the 1572 Cumberland knight of the shire because he is the only known Edward Scrope whose election can readily be explained. It would have been obtained through the influence of his brother, the 9th Lord Scrope, who had been appointed warden of the west march in 1562. Scrope’s birth date has been estimated from that of his brother and his own admission to Lincoln’s Inn, and his death date from the fact that a by-election was held to replace one of the Cumberland MPs in 1580; the other Member is known to have lived until 1597. The latest known appearance of Scrope’s name in the records is a reference to his obtaining a lease for Thomas Warcop in 1574.
