Biography

Walley was concerned, on behalf of the city, in the recovery of chantry lands in 1585. Various payments to him are recorded in the chamberlains’ accounts: two stipends of £40 as mayor, £4 for his charges at the musters and £50 which he had spent in the chantry lands business, as well as £3 paid to him in 1590 as ‘burgess money’ or parliamentary wages.

Walley’s death ‘sometime alderman of this city’ is recorded in Bath abbey register in April 1615. There was another John Walley, nephew of the 1589 MP, who was mayor in 1589 and died 1593. This man was a marriage connexion of William Shareston, whom he calls ‘my brother’ (presumably brother-in-law) in his will.
