Biography

Warner’s connexions at the Elizabethan court included Sir Robert Dudley; Walter Devereux, 2nd Viscount Hereford, later 1st Earl of Essex; and the Mores of Loseley, and no doubt it was a simple matter for him to secure a return for a Cornish borough in the first Parliament of the reign. After succeeding his brother, Warner settled as a country gentleman in Norfolk. Next he married into the Suffolk family of Wingfield, and so did his son Henry. Robert Warner made his will in August 1575 and died 7 Oct. that year. His wife had kept up her former establishment at Bresworth, Suffolk: a separate schedule in Warner’s will listed household goods ‘had from my house at Norwich to Bresworth’ including seven ‘not very good’ curtains. Among bequests to relatives were two of 40s. to nieces, ‘for remembrance that I was their poor uncle’. Warner’s brother-in-law, John Marshe was supervisor. The widow lived at Bresworth until about 1579.
