Biography

In his early teens in 1554, Wroth probably went with his parents into exile at Strasbourg, returning to the family estate at Enfield soon after Elizabeth’s accession. He resumed his studies at Cambridge, gaining his LLB in 1562. Next he entered the service of the 3rd Earl of Sussex, who was presumably behind Wroth’s return to Parliament for boroughs where Sussex had influence as president of the council in the north. Wroth remained with Sussex until that nobleman’s death in 1583, when he was made an executor of his will. He had to account for large sums of money he had handled for the Earl, but his own rewards had been ample, and, with a further £500 inherited from his father in 1573, he bought property in Kent and Essex, and, in 1584, secured the lease of the manor of Highbury. He died in late May or early June 1596, appointing his brother John as his executor.
