Biography
Darell was descended from Sir Thomas Darell, MP for East Retford in 1604. His grandfather, a London merchant, had gained Trewornan, near Liskeard, by marriage. Returned unopposed at a by-election for Liskeard in 1696, Darell was again successful in 1698 on the recommendation of the recorder, Bishop Trelawny of Exeter. Shortly afterwards, Darell was forecast as likely to oppose the standing army, and a comparison of the old and new Commons classed him as a Country supporter. Darell was absent at a call of the House on 8 Jan. 1700 and was ordered into custody, not being released until the 22nd. He was an inactive Member, making no recorded speech. Re-elected in January 1701, he does not appear on any subsequent list and after the dissolution no longer figured as a parliamentary candidate. In April 1705 he replaced John Manley* as sub-commissioner of prizes in Plymouth, a post he held until his death on 4 Feb. 1706. Darell died intestate, and on 12 Dec. 1706 his wife petitioned the Commons for a bill allowing the sale of part of his estates, estimated to be worth £600 p.a., in order to satisfy debts amounting to £8,000 and to provide for his younger children. Such a bill was ordered and gained the Royal Assent in March 1707.3
