Biography

Ellys’ early life is obscure, but he may have attended a Dissenting school near London in 1697 on the recommendation of his aunt Hampden. Returned for Wendover on the interest of his cousin Richard Hampden II*, Ellys was classed as a Whig in a list of Parliament of early 1708 with the returns of the election added. He also supported the naturalization of the Palatines early in 1709, and on 10 Mar. acted as teller against committing a bill for regulating building practices. This promising start to a career in the Commons was ended by Ellys’ untimely death on 24 May 1709. Despite coming from a wealthy family, he had few possessions, which were left to a creditor to pay a debt of £160.3
