Biography

Although returned with the Whig William Harbord* by the old corporation at Thetford in 1690, Guybon was classed by Lord Carmarthen (Sir Thomas Osborne, 2nd Bt.†) as a Tory supporter of the Court. He took his seat when the double return for Thetford was judged on 3 May, and was nominated six days later to prepare a bill for the regulation of wine. In December Carmarthen forecast that Guybon would probably support him in the event of a Commons’ attack on his ministerial position. Robert Harley* classed him as a member of the Court party in April 1691. Guybon was given a fortnight’s leave of absence on 22 Dec. because of illness. On 2 Jan. 1694 he was appointed to the drafting committee on a bill for the assize of bread. He obtained three weeks’ leave of absence on 23 Feb. and indefinite leave on health grounds on 6 Mar. 1695. He retired from Parliament at the next election. A private estate bill for the sale of part of his Norfolk property was managed through the Commons by the county Member Sir Henry Hobart, 4th Bt., in early 1698. Guybon died on 23 Jan. 1705.1
