Biography

Of a long-established Northumberland family, Orde was still a minor when he succeeded to sizable estates in Northumberland and Durham. He settled at Sandibank, near Berwick-upon-Tweed, a borough where a number of his ancestors had served as aldermen in the 15th and 16th centuries, and in 1710 he was mentioned as a possible candidate at that year’s election. Though he decided against standing in 1710, Orde entered the lists at the Berwick by-election the following year. Defeated at the poll, he was successful at the 1713 election following a campaign which he later claimed cost him £1,500. Orde’s interest in parliamentary affairs and attention to the concerns of his constituency were evident in March 1714, when he sent Berwick a report of the debate upon the expulsion of Richard Steele and suggested the wording for a petition from the borough requesting payment of arrears due to the town for the quartering of troops. He was not, however, an active Member; the Worsley list classed him as a Tory. Orde did not stand for Parliament again, and he either died or was buried on 18 June 1748. His unentailed estates were inherited by his three daughters, while the entailed estates descended to his nephew John Orde, whose son Thomas represented Aylesbury and Harwich under George III.2
