Biography

Sawle’s father, who stood at Tregony on the Trevanion interest at a by-election in 1679, was appointed a member of the remodelled Tory corporation in 1685. Hals, the historian of Cornwall and a friend of Sawle, describes him as ‘notably famous for his humanity, hospitality and charity to the poor’. Returned for Tregony, also on the Trevanion interest in 1702, Sawle was forecast as a probable supporter of the Tack on 30 Oct. 1704, and though he appeared on Robert Harley’s* lobbying list on this matter he nevertheless voted for it on 28 Nov. He did not stand in 1705 or at any subsequent election, and died on 22 May 1737, aged 63.2
