Biography

Sydney entered the Commons two years before attaining his majority. His presence there as a consistent Court supporter is affirmed by a forecast of his approval of the proposed council of trade in the division expected on 31 Jan. 1696, by his prompt signature of the Association the following month, his vote in favour of fixing the price of guineas at 22s. in March, and by his support on 25 Nov. for the attainder of Sir John Fenwick†. An inactive Member, he stood down at the next election shortly after his father succeeded to the Leicester earldom, and embarked on a tour abroad. He assumed the title himself in 1702, but his enjoyment of the honour was cut short by an illness from which he died on 24 July 1705.
