Biography

Tempest succeeded to the Durham estates of his father (Member for Durham in the 1690 Parliament) in March 1700 and in January the following year unsuccessfully contested the Durham election. He did not stand for the borough again, but in March 1707 was returned unchallenged at the county by-election. He acted as teller on 24 Feb. 1708 against engrossing an Irish forfeitures bill. An analysis of the Commons dating from early 1708 classed him as a Tory. Tempest does not appear to have stood for election again, and he was buried at St. Giles’s, Durham, on 30 Jan. 1738. He was succeeded by his eldest son and namesake, who represented Durham in the reigns of George II and George III.
