Reports of House of Commons debates

This appendix makes no claim to be a comprehensive listing of all reports of House of Commons debates in the period. Excluded are those which omit any account of individual speeches but merely describe proceedings in a general way; nor would it have been at all practicable to have attempted to list the multitude of reports (some of them lengthy and elaborate), which are to be found in private correspondence. With these exceptions, what follows may be described as an inventory of all the reports of debates which have been used in the preparation of the biographies and constituency articles: contemporary publications, later compilations (for example by Chandler or Cobbett), private parliamentary diaries, and ‘separates’ (often in the form of notes taken in the House by individual Members). The identity of the reporter is given where it may be established (and is not implicit in the description of the document, as would be the case with the diaries of Sir Richard Cocks and Narcissus Luttrell), but the dependence of one source on another, for example in the amount of material reprinted in Cobbett’s Parliamentary History, has not been noted. For a full discussion of the varieties of parliamentary reporting, see Sources and The Organization of the House.
