Biography

Bertie, whose wife had inherited the manor of Stanwell,1 sat as a Tory for Middlesex, where he had ‘a great and well established’ interest.2 From 1715 he voted against the Government in all recorded divisions. On 22 Nov. 1724 he seconded a motion for an inquiry into the outrages committed by outlaws in Wapping under the pretext of sheltering for debt,3 becoming a member of the committee set up to conduct this inquiry.4 He did not stand in 1734, dying 18 Oct. 1735.
